We propose this spectacular enduro-style tour with e-bikes, given that the 3.5 km climb to the Cassana Pass presents inclines of 20-25%! Departing from Livigno we cross the first part of the Val Federia, then head for the day’s climb, the “Cassana Pass”.
The entire climb is very demanding and the last section on single-track, becomes a real challenge, even if you manage to pedal it with the assistance of an e-bike! From here, after passing some old military barracks, we follow the entire ridge which defines the border with Switzerland; a beautiful trail of ups and downs which disappears in parts leaving you free to create your own route.
We pass through an area called “Gessi” (“chalk” – similar to the area you can see on the way up the Forcola Pass from Switzerland), where the white rock reminds us of a lunar landscape! On reaching the Leverone Notch, we descend along a beautiful trail (in parts very fluid with a smooth surface, and in parts with particularly loose ground) which takes us to the “Malga di Federia” (a farmstead). Here the second climb of the day awaits us! We climb the final part of the Val Federia along a dirt road until we reach “Carosello 3000”.
A quick visit to the “Madònon” (or “Monte delle Rezze”) where we can enjoy a spectacular view of Livigno and – why not – a lovely coffee prepared with a moka pot inside the wonderful little mountain hut (baitèl) situated right at the top. Then back down towards Val Federia along a lovely trail which takes us once more to the farmstead. But it’s not over yet!
After riding along part of the dirt road that leads back into town, we climb back up a path which takes us to a higher level leading to a lovely trail where, if we want, we can enjoy an excellent lunch at Leo and Francesca’s wonderful “Tea da Memi”, a unique little place which deserves a visit. Try it and see for yourself; the uncontaminated beauty of “Valle del Leverone” is well worth the effort!
